What is the difference between a performance film and a music video?
A performance film captures the artist performing the song, honestly and in one mood. A music video builds a separate world around the song, with concept, locations, wardrobe, and often a cast or narrative.
The practical difference is scope. A performance film is one artist, one setup, one atmosphere, and it can be shot in a couple of hours. A music video is a production: pre-production, creative direction, a shot list, sometimes multiple locations and crew, and a much longer edit.
That shows up in cost and timeline. Performance films start at $125 with me; a fully directed music film starts at $1,200 because of everything that happens around the filming.
Neither one is a lesser version of the other. If the song's strength is the delivery, a performance film will serve it better. If the song has a world in it that people need to see, that's a music video.
